Strategically located the state of Jammu and Kashmir constitutes the northern most extremity of India. Jammu & Kashmir with its summer and winter capitals at Srinagar and Jammu, respectively, is divided into 3 major and distinct regions - Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh.

Kashmir is famous for its natural beauty and has often been referred to as the 'Switzerland of the East'. The heart of the area is the fertile Vale of Kashmir (known as The Valley), which lies between the Himalayas and the Pir Panjal mountain range. Here the climate is mild and the soil well watered. A large part of Jammu & Kashmir state forms part of the Himalayan mountains. A major portion of Jammu & Kashmir State consists of the western Himalayas, which besides many lofty mountain ranges with varying heights of 3000 to 6000 metres and above, also abound in rivers, lakes, passes, glaciers, plateaus and plains. The number of streams, brooks, hill torrents and rivers is also fairly large. The most important rivers in the Jammu & Kashmir are the Indus, Chenab, Jehlum and Ravi, which irrigates the land through out the year. The state of Jammu & Kashmir is geologically constituted of rocks varying from the oldest period of the earth’s history to the youngest present day river and lake deposits. The rich flora of Jammu & Kashmir shelters a large number of rare and endangered species, rare to find elsewhere.

The most magnificent of the Kashmir trees is the Chinar found throughout the valley. This land is a happy combination of the mighty splendour of mountains, of lovely glades and forests. The freshness and the peaceful calm of the atmosphere on these snow-peaked ranges as against the arid heat, din and fatigue of the Sun-baked plains of India, act as a tonic to the body and fills the mind with a feeling of pleasant contrasts. This is the first glimpse the sun-tanned visitor has of the glamour of Kashmir, which is often heard, sung in prose as well as verse. In fact, no other part of the country offers such a lovely sight.

Jammu and Kashmir is the northern-most state of Republic of India, lying mostly in the Himalayan mountains. Jammu and Kashmir shares a border with Himachal Pradesh to the south, Pakistan to the west and People's Republic of China to the north and the east. Jammu and Srinagar are the capitals of Jammu and Kashmir.

Jammu and Kashmir consists of three divisions: Jammu, the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh. Srinagar is its summer capital, and Jammu its winter capital. Kashmir is known for its pristine natural beauty and rich cuisine. The state is India's only Muslim majority state. Minority religions in the state include Hinduism, Buddhism and Sikhism.

History

Jammu and Kashmir was a princely state with a Muslim majority ruled by a Hindu Maharaja Hari Singh until 1947. In 1947, when the Indian subcontinent achieved independence from United Kingdom, Hari Singh decided to join India. Soon after the independence on 27th October 1947, the Indian government sent troops into the princely state after the Raja signed the agreement to vote for India. Ever since, a bitter enmity has developed between India and Pakistan. The two countries have been at war twice over Kashmir (1947-1949, 1965), and clashed there again during the Kargil Conflict of 1999. The region remains one of the most heavily militarized zones in the world.

Geography

The region of Kashmir and Jammu includes dry climates in the southwest, a strip of humid temperate climate through the center of the region, and humid cold climate in the north.

Culture

Kashmiri lifestyle is essentially, irrespective of the differing religious beliefs, slow paced. Generally peace loving people, the culture has been rich enough to reflect the religious diversity as tribes celebrate festivities that divert them from their otherwise monotonous way of life. Kashmiris are known to enjoy their music in its various local forms and the dress of both sexes are quite colorful.

The Dumhal is a famous dance in Kashmir, performed by men of the Wattal region. The women perform the Rouff, another folk dance. Kashmir has been noted for its fine arts for centuries, including poetry and handicrafts.

The practice of Islam in Kashmir has heavy Sufi influences, which makes it unique from orthodox Sunni and Shiite Islam in the rest of South Asia. Other religions practised in the state include Hinduism, Buddhism and Sikhism.
